Portland, Oregon

If you're going through a divorce in the Portland area, I want to help.

I'm Leanne Ozaine, a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst with 20 years of experience. I'm based in Spokane, WA and work with Portland clients virtually via Zoom.

I know how overwhelming this feels. You don't need to have everything figured out before you reach out.

Two-thirds of divorce is about money

Your attorney handles the legal side. They negotiate terms, file motions, represent you in court. That's what they're trained for. But they're not building financial models. They're not calculating whether you can actually afford the house you're fighting for, or tracing years of retirement contributions to separate what's marital from what's not.

That's what I do. I help you gather your financial information, understand your numbers, and know the right questions to ask. I can help draft settlement proposals that reflect reality, not just what sounds fair on paper. And I work cooperatively with your attorney so the legal strategy and the financial analysis support each other.

A Certified Divorce Financial Analyst handles the part your attorney isn't trained for. That's me.

What makes Portland divorces different

Oregon has its own set of financial considerations that affect how a divorce plays out. The state has a progressive income tax (up to 9.9%), no sales tax, and its own rules around spousal support that factor heavily into settlement math. If your spouse earns significantly more than you, or if you've been out of the workforce, understanding how Oregon calculates maintenance is critical to knowing what your post-divorce life actually looks like.

Portland also has a unique real estate market. Many families bought homes during rapid appreciation periods. Determining the marital equity in a home, especially when one spouse brought a down payment from premarital funds or an inheritance, requires careful tracing.

And if you or your spouse works across the river in Washington (which has no state income tax), the financial picture gets more complicated. I work with clients on both sides of the Columbia and understand how cross-state income and property affect the overall settlement.

What Oregon law means for your finances

Oregon is an equitable distribution state. Courts divide assets "justly and properly," which gives judges significant discretion. Here's what that means for you:

  • The court considers factors like length of marriage, each spouse's earning capacity, and contributions (financial and non-financial) to the marriage
  • "Equitable" does not mean equal. The division depends on what the court considers fair given the full picture
  • Property owned before marriage may be considered separate, but commingling or using it for the benefit of the marriage can change that
  • Retirement accounts, pensions, and investment accounts accumulated during marriage are subject to division
  • Oregon has a state income tax, which affects how different asset types are valued after division
  • Spousal support (maintenance) calculations factor into the overall financial picture of the settlement

When "justly and properly" is up to a judge's interpretation, you need someone who can calculate exactly what's at stake and present the numbers clearly. That's my job.
